DESCRIPTION

TheTEA3718andTEA3718Sare bipolarmonolithic
integratedcircuits intendedto control and drive the
currentin one windingofa bipolar stepper motor.
The circuits consistof an LS-TTL compatible logic
input,a current sensor,a monostableand anoutput
stagewith built-in protection diodes. Two TEA3718 TEA3718Sanda few externalcomponentsform complete control and drive unitfor LS-TTLor mi-
croprocessor-controlled stepper motor systems.

PIN FUNCTIONS
Name Function

OUTB Output Connection (with pin OUTA). The output stageisa ”H” bridge formedby four
transistors and four diodes suitablefor switching applications.
PULSE TIME A parallel RC network connectedto this pin sets the OFF timeof the lower power
transistors. The pulse generatorisa monostable triggeredby the rising edgeof the
outputof the comparators (toff= 0.69 RTCT).
VS(B) Supply Voltage Inputfor Half Output Stage
GND Ground Connection.In SO-20L and Powerdip these pins also conduct heat from die printed circuit copper.
VSS Supply Voltage Inputfor Logic Circuitry
IN1 Thispin andpin IN0 are logic inputs which select the outputsof three comparatorsto
set the current level. Current also depends on the sensing resistor and reference
voltage. See truth table.
PHASE This TTL-compatible logic input sets the directionof current flow through the load.A
high level causes currentto flow from OUTA (source)to OUTB (sink).A Schmitt
triggeron this input provides good noise immunity anda delay circuit prevents output
stage short circuits during switching.
IN0 See INPUT1
COMPARATOR INPUT Input connectedto the three comparators. The voltage across the sense resistoris
feedbackto this input through the low pass filter RCCC. The lower power transistor
are disabled when the sense voltage exceeds the reference voltageof the selected
comparator. When this occurs the current decaysfora timesetby RTCT,Toff= 0.69
RTCT.
REFERENCE A voltage appliedto this pin sets the reference voltageof the three comparators.
Reference voltage with the valueofRS and the two inputs IN0 and IN1 determines
the output current.
