SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The M4TXX-BR12SH SNAPHAT® topisa detach-
able lithium power source for ST’s non-volatile
TIMEKEEPER® surface-mount SOIC (MH) pack-
age (28- and 44-pin).
The SNAPHAT top contains both the battery and
crystal andis designedto be “snapped on” after
the SOICis surface mounted on the PC board.
Thus the two piece solution prevents the battery
and crystal from being exposedto the high tem-
peraturesof the surface mount process. Table1. Signal Names

MAXIMUM RATING

Stressing the deviceabove therating listedinthe
“Absolute Maximum Ratings” table may cause
permanent damage to the device. These are
stress ratings only and operationof the deviceat
theseor any other conditions above those indicat-in the Operating sectionsof this specificationis
not implied. Exposureto Absolute Maximum Rat-
ing conditionsfor extended periods may affect de-
vice reliability. Refer also to the
STMicroelectronics SURE Program and other rel-
evant quality documents.
Table2. Absolute Maximum Ratings

Note:1. Onlythe M4T32-BR12SHis availablein Industrial temperature (Grade6).
CAUTION:
Do NOT wave solder SOICto avoid damaging SNAPHAT sockets. AND AC PARAMETERS
This section summarizes the operating and mea-
surement conditions, as well as the DC and AC
characteristicsof the device. The parametersin
the following DC and AC Characteristic tables are
derived from tests performed under the Measure-
ment Conditions listedin the relevant tables. De-
signers should check that the operating conditions their projects match the measurement condi-
tions when using the quoted parameters.

MECHANICAL INFORMATION

Electrical connectionto the SOICis made through
four pins that connectto the four press fitted sock-
etsat each endof the SOIC. Critical contact points
between the pins and sockets are gold-platedto
resist oxidation. Internally, each socket contains
six independent contact fingersto form redundant
connections between the two components. These
sockets were designed with high point contact
forceto provide the lowest possible contact resis-
tance. The SNAPHAT® top also incorporates four
molded-in retaining clips which hold onto the ends the SOIC insuring mechanical and electrical
connection even under severe mechanical shock
and vibration. The combined SOIC and SNAPHAT
assembly can sustain shock levelsin excessof
100g without separating. This package also pass- variable frequency testingin accordance with
MIL-STD-883, method 2007.2, conditionA.
Figure3 illustrates the affectof repeated insertion
and extractionof the SNAPHAT topto the SOIC.
The force requiredto extract the SNAPHAT, and
thento re-insertit, reduces each time. After fouror
five extractions, the reduction startsto become
unnoticeable and the force required remainsata
fairly constant figure. Typically, though, the
SNAPHAT will only needto be extracted and re-
inserted onceinits lifetime.

Battery Characteristics

Figure4, page7 illustrates the lithium coin cell dis-
charge rate fora given load. This demonstrates
the characteristically flat voltage level suppliedby
the battery until very near the endofits life. These
discharge levels have been greatly acceleratedin
comparisonto the normal, actual usage.
Note:
These batteries contain no Mercury (Hg),
Cadmium (Cd),or Lead (Pb). Recognition
The M4Txx-BR12SH has been recognizedby Un-
derwriters Laboratories under their Component
Recognition Program and carries U.L. File Num-
ber E89556.
Battery Life

For informationon Data Retention Life and Battery
Storage Life, please referto the Application Note
AN1012.
General Notes
has conducted experiments usinga manual
press which determined thatif approximately 60
pounds of forceis applied to the top of the
SNAPHAT®, battery damage and/or die cracks
could be induced. As Figure3, page5 specifies,
onlyan averageof less than13 force-poundsisre-
quiredfor proper insertion. We recommend thatno
more than 40 poundsof force be applied during
SNAPHAT insertion.a manual pressin employed, itis very important
thatitbe calibrated such thatit cannot exceed this
limit. remove the SNAPHAT top for replacement,a
DIP/IC extractor tool should be used (see Figure
5). The SNAPHAP top should be grabbedby the
narrow endto avoid bending the pins.
Caution:
To avoid draining batterydo NOT place
SNAPHAT pins into conductive foam.
Caution:
To avoid damaging SNAPHAT sockets NOT wave solder SOIC.
