General Description
The LM78LXX seriesof three terminal positive regulatorsis
available with several fixed output voltages making them
usefulina wide rangeof applications. When usedasaze-
ner diode/resistor combination replacement,the LM78LXX
usually resultsinan effective output impedance improve-
mentoftwo ordersof magnitude,and lower quiescentcur-
rent. These regulatorscan provide localon card regulation,
eliminatingthe distribution problems associated with single
point regulation.The voltages available allowthe LM78LXXbe usedin logic systems, instrumentation, HiFi,and other
solid state electronic equipment.
The LM78LXXis availableinthe metal three-lead TO-39(H)
package,the plastic TO-92(Z) package, andthe plastic
SO-8(M) package. With adequate heat sinkingthe regulator
candeliver100mA output current. Current limitingis includ-tolimitthe peak outputcurrenttoa safe value. Safe area
protectionforthe output transistorsis providedto limit inter-
nal power dissipation.If internal power dissipation becomes
too highforthe heatsinking provided,the thermalshutdown
circuit takes over preventingtheIC from overheating.
