General DescriptionThe LM5642 consistsof two current mode synchronous
buck regulator controllers operating 180˚outof phase with
each otherata normal switching frequencyof 200kHz.
Outof phase operation reduces the input ripple RMS cur-
rent, thereby significantly reducingthe required input capaci-
tance. The switching frequency canbe synchronizedtoan
external clock between 150kHz and 250kHz. The two switch-
ing regulator outputs can alsobe paralleledto operateasa
dual-phase single output regulator.
The outputof each channel canbe independently adjusted
from1.3to 90%of Vin.An internal5Vrailis also available
externallyfor driving bootstrap circuitry.
Current-mode feedback control assures excellent line and
load regulation anda wide loop bandwidthfor excellent
responseto fast load transients. Currentis sensed across
eitherthe Vdsofthe top FETor acrossan external current-
sense resistor connectedin series with the drainof the top
FET.
The LM5642 features analog soft-start circuitry thatis inde-
pendentof the output load and output capacitance making
the soft-start behavior more predictable and controllable
than traditional soft-start circuits.
Over-voltage protectionis availablefor both outputs.A UV-
Delaypinis also availableto allow delayed shutoff timefor
theIC duringan output under-voltage event.
