General DescriptionThe LM3916isa monolithic integrated circuit that senses
analog voltage levels and drivesten LEDs, LCDsor vacuum
fluorescent displays, providingan electronic versionof the
popularVU meter. Onepin changes the display froma bar
graphtoa movingdot display. LED current driveis regulated
and programmable, eliminating the needfor current limiting
resistors. The whole display system can operate froma
single supplyas lowas3Voras highas 25V.
TheIC containsan adjustable voltage reference andan
accurate ten-step voltage divider. The high-impedance input
buffer accepts signals downto ground andupto within 1.5Vthe positive supply. Further,it needsno protection against
inputsof ±35V. The input buffer drives10 individual com-
parators referencedto the precision divider. Accuracyis
typically better than0.2 dB.
Audio applications include averageor peak level indicators,
and power meters. Replacing conventional meters withan
LED bar graph resultsina faster responding, more rugged
display with high visibility that retains the easeof interpreta-
tionofan analog display.
The LM3916is extremely easyto apply.A 1.2V full-scale
meter requires only one resistorin additiontotheten LEDs.
One more resistor programs the full-scale anywhere from
1.2Vto 12V independentof supply voltage. LED brightness easily controlled witha single pot.
The LM3916is very versatile. The outputs can drive LCDs,
vacuum fluorescents and incandescent bulbsas wellas
LEDsof any color. Multiple devices canbe cascadedfora
dotor bar mode displayfor increased range and/or resolu-
tion. Usefulin other applications are the linear LM3914 and
the logarithmic LM3915.
