LM1946 Over/Under Current Limit Diagnostic Circuit
General Description
The LM1946 providesthe industrialor automotive system
designer with overor under currentlimit detection superiorthatof ordinary transistoror comparator-based circuits.
Eachofthefive independent comparatorscanbe usedto
monitora separate loadas eitheran over currentor under
current limit detector. Two comparators monitoringa single
loadcan functionasa current window monitor.
Currentis sensedby monitoringthe voltage drop acrossthe
wiring harness,pc board trace,or external sense resistor
that feedsthe load.
Provisionsfor compensatingthe userset limitsfor wiring
harness resistance variations over temperatureand supply
voltage variationsare also available.
Whena limitis reachedinoneofthe comparators,it turnsits output whichcan drivean external LEDor microproc-
essor.
One sideofthe loadcanbe grounded (not possible with
ordinary comparator designs), whichis importantfor auto-
motive systems.
