DESCRIPTION

The L6243/Disa BipolarIC developedfor usein
Hard Disk Head Actuator positioning applications.
The Power Op-Amp Output Bridge, Differential
Amplifier, and Error Amplifier, are controlled by
TTL/CMOS, input compatible, Digital Logic, and Analog Current Control Voltage.A simple compensation network, tiedto the outputof
the Error Amp, will configure the systemto worka Transconductance Amplifier to drivea
Voice Coil Motorin LinearMode.
Additional features include Power On Reset De-
lay, Enable and Park, as wellasa general pur-
pose Operational Amplifier.A logic lowat the
Park input activates the parking function. Holding
the Enable input low will disable the device by
forcing the outputs intoa tristate mode. Power
Fail Monitors for the logic and power supplies in-
itiate an automatic parking sequence duringa
power failure.A resistor programmed parking
voltage enablesa constant velocity head retract.

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
The VCM Driveris controlled via three control sig-
nals, ENABLE, POWER ON RESET, and WRITE
DISABLE.An analog input voltage, ERROR AMP
IN, controls the polarity and amplitudeof the VCM
driving current.
Referto figure two. This diagramisa repre-
sentationof the functionof the VCM System.
Note that the signals with the bars represent the
”not true”,or ”non asserted”condition. From in-
itial power up, the systemis heldin the Park
Mode. Upon completionof the POWER UP RE-
SET DELAY the machine movesto Tristate Mode Run Mode, depending upon the conditionof
the ENABLE input.If ENABLEis asserted, the
machine moves directlyto Run Mode.If ENABLE not asserted, the machine movesto Tristate
Mode.
POWER ON RESETis an asynchronous output.
Additionallyit affects the internal logicasa hard
wired reset and thereforeifa supply failure occurs
during Tristateor Run state, the machine moves
directly backto the Park Mode.A WRITE DIS-
ABLE occursa fewto ten microseconds priorto
the POWER ON RESETin order for the system halt any read/write activity beforea head re-
tract begins.
Whilein Tristate Mode, the assertionof ENABLE
will move the machineto the Run Mode. Run
Mode will typically be the steady running state.
The deassertionof the ENABLE signal causes
the machineto move into Tristate.Ifitis desired perform an active Parking function, the PARK
input must be driven low by the external hard-
ware,or the the VCM can be drivento the Park
position via the ERROR AMPIN control voltage

Output
TTL compatible signal indicatingthe VCC supply has dropped below the POWER FAIL
THRESHOLD.
LOGIC SUPPLY
SENSE input
This inputis usedto monitorthe Five Volt Logic Supplyforthe external control and other support
IC’s. The LOGIC SUPPLY SENSE operates independentlyof the 12V Power Supply. Whena supply failureis detecteda POWER ON RESETis generated. FILTER input Thispin allowsfor the applicationof filter circuitryin orderto avoid false triggering.
PARK POWER
input
This inputis used duringthe Power Down/Power Fail Parking operation. When the supply goes
down,a typical Spindle Driver Circuit automatically tristatesits output stages. During this time
the spindle motor spins freely and the stored energyis usedto drivethe VCMto the park
position. The generated BEMFis rectifiedand filtered acrossan external PARKING
CAPACITOR.

external systemto assume control. When appliedina Disk Drive Application, thePOWER ON
RESET DELAYwillbe requiredto havea minimum duration which will ensure that the
Read/Write Heads canbe fully parked.
WRITE DISABLE
output
Becomes asserteda few microseconds priorto the assertionof POWER ON RESET.
Internal 30k Pullupto LSS.
ENABLE input This signal originatesatthe external controller and, when asserted, allowsthe VCM Driversto
operate. When deassertedthe VCM Driveris forced into Tristate mode. Duringa POWER ON
RESET condition however, the parkingoperationis automatic and takes priority overthe
ENABLE function. Onlyatthe endofthe POWER ON RESET DELAYwillthe ENABLE input
become active.If active parkingis desired,itwillbe accomplished under controlof theVIN
signal, otherwiseitisan automatic functionat power down.
VREF input The referencevoltage inputis basically that voltage,at which the output currentis zero.
