General Description

The bq2010 Gas GaugeICis intended
for battery-packor in-system installa-
tionto maintainan accurate recordof battery's available charge. TheIC
monitorsa voltage drop acrossa
sense resistor connectedin seriesbe-
tween the negative battery terminal
and groundto determine charge and
discharge activityofthe battery.
NiMH and NiCd battery self-dis-
chargeis estimated basedonan inter-
nal timer and temperature sensor.
Compensations for battery tempera-
ture and rateof chargeor discharge
are appliedto the charge, discharge,
and self-discharge calculationsto pro-
vide available charge information
acrossa wide rangeof operating con-
ditions. Battery capacityis automati-
cally recalibrated,or “learned,”in the
courseofa discharge cycle fromfullto
empty.
Nominal available charge maybe
directly indicated usinga five-or
six-segment LED display. These seg-
ments are usedto indicate graphi-
cally thenominal available charge.
The bq2010 supportsa simple
single-line bidirectional serial linkto external processor (common
ground). The bq2010 outputs battery
informationin responseto external
commandsoverthe serial link.
The bq2010 may operate directly
from3or4 cells. Withthe REF out-
put andan external transistor,a sim-
ple, inexpensive regulatorcanbe built provide VCC acrossa greater
numberof cells.
Internal registers include available
charge, temperature, capacity, battery
ID, battery status, and programming
pin settings.To support subassembly
testing,the outputs may alsobe con-
trolled. The external processor may
also overwrite someof the bq2010
gas gauge data registers.
