MIL STD 883C- Method 3015-6class3 C= 100 pF R= 1500Ω positive strikes and3 negative strikes (F=1Hz)
IEC-1000-4-2 level4 kV (air discharge)kV (contact discharge)
COMPLIES WITH THE FOLLOWING STANDARDS:TM:ASDand TRANSILare trademarksofST Microelectronics.
Where transient overvoltage protectionin sensi-
tive equipmentis required, such as: Universal Serial Bus ports RS-423 interfaces RS-485 interfaces ISDN equipment T1/E1 line cards HDSL/ ASDL interfaces
APPLICATIONS Full diode bridge with integrated clamping protection Breakdown voltage: VBR= 6V min. Peak pulsepower dissipation:PPP =500W(8/20μs) Very low capacitance, compatible with high debit
dataor signal rates.
FEATURES orderto prevent fast transients from leading severe damagesina high speed data sys-
tem,a specific protection has been developed STMicroelectronics.
The
USB6Bx protects the two input lines
against overvoltage. Besides, this device also
keeps the power railsina safe limit thanksto
the integrated Transil diode.
DESCRIPTION Provides protection for each line and between
the supply voltage and GND: 25A, 8/20μs. High ESD protection level:upto level3 per
MIL STD 883C-Method 3015-6 Separated inputs and outputs (so-called 4-point
structure)to improve ESD susceptibility. Comprehensive package pin-out for immediate
implementation.
BENEFITS
USB6Bx
Fig. A1:The USB6Bxis particularly optimizedto perform
surge protection basedon the railto rail topology.
The clampingvoltage VCL canbe estimatedas follow:
VCL+=Vcc+VF for positive surges
VCL -=-VF for negative surges
with:VF =Vt+ rd.Ip
(VF forward drop voltage)/ (Vt forward drop
threshold voltage)
Note: the estimationsdo not take into account
phenomena dueto parasitic inductances.
SURGE PROTECTION
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
USB6BxWhile the USB6Bx providesa high immunityto
ESD surge,an efficient protection dependson the
layoutof the board. In the same way, with the railto
rail topology, the track from the VCC pinto the
power supply and from the GND pinto GND volt-
age must be as short as possible to avoid
overvoltages dueto parasitic phenomena (see Fig
A1).
It’s often harderto connect the power supply near the USB6Bx unlike the ground thanksto the
ground plane that allowsa short connection. ensure the same efficiency for positive surges
when the connections can’tbe short enough, we
recommendto put closeto the USB6Bx between
VCC and ground,a capacitanceof 100nFto pre-
vent from these kindsof overvoltage disturbances
(see Fig. A2).
The addof this capacitance will allowa better pro-
tectionby providing during surgea constant volt-
age.
Fig. A3 shows the improvementof the ESD pro-
tection accordingto the recommendations de-
scribed above.
HOW TO ENSUREA GOOD ESD PROTECTION Fig. A2: ESD behavior: optimized layout and adda capacitanceof 100nF.
IMPORTANT: main precautionto takeisto put the protection
device closerto the disturbance source (generally
the connection).

Universal Serial Bus.The new data transmission standard, Universal
Serial Bus (USB)is being drivenby market leaders the worldof Computer and Telecommunica-
tions, including Compaq, DEC, IBM, Intel,
Microsoft, NEC and Nortel, and will become the
leading transmission protocol within the next few
years.
This standard mainly provides simplified
interconnectivity. Specialized portson the backof
the present PC will largely be replaced by USB
ports. Many peripherals such as printers, key-
boards, monitors and joysticks will also host USB
ports.
The USB offers high speed communication ratesto 12 Mbit/s. Only two wires (D+, D-) are re-
quired for data transfer. Additionally, limited
amountof power for USB devices locatedon the
downstream can alsobe transmittedon two sepa-
rate conductors within the same cable.
Protectionto support USB.Designers dealing with the USB chips are con-
cerned about electrostatic discharge sensitivity
(ESD)of their USB controller ICs.
The USB controlleris more than justa driver/
receiver;it acts asa microcontroller which
manages power and direct signal traffic. This
complexity increases its cost over conven-
tional devices. Therefore,a failureofa USB
port could resultin costly computer failure. orderto prevent these fast transients from
leadingto severe damagesina system,a
specific protection has been developed by
STMicroelectronics. The USB6Bx protects
not only the two wiresof data transmission,
but also keep the power railsina safe limit.
The capacitance between the I/O transmission
wires providesno significant signal distortionat the Mbit/s data rate, thus allowing full compatibility
with USB standard.
Available either ina compact SO8 or ina
through-hole DIL8 package, this protective ele-
ment requires minimal board space and eases the
PCB layout thankstoits direct compatibility with
the USB connector pin-out.
