High Channel Count Digital Input Modules for and PLC Systems Decentralized I/O ModulesThe SN65HVS880isa 24-V, eight-channel, digital-input serializer for high-channel density digital input modules PC and PLC based systemsin industrial automation.In combination with galvanic isolators the device
completes the interface between the 24-V sensor outputsof the field-side and the low-voltage controller inputsat
the control-side. Input signals provided by EN60947-5-2 compliant 2- and 3-wire proximity switches are
current-limited and then validatedby internal debounce filters. The input switching characteristicisin accordance
with IEC61131-2for Type1,2, and3 sensor switches.
Upon the applicationof load and clock signals, input datais latchedin parallel into the shift register and
afterwards clocked out serially viaa subsequent isolator intoa serial PLC input.
Cascadingof multiple SN65HVS880is possibleby connecting the serial outputof the leading device with the
serial inputof the following device, enabling the designof high-channel count input modules. Input statusis
indicated via 3-mA constant current LED outputs. An external precision resistoris requiredto set the internal
reference current. The integrated voltage regulator providesa 5-V outputto supply low-power isolators. An
on-chip temperature sensor together with an internal supply voltage monitor providesa chip-okay (CHOK)
indication.
The SN65HVS880 comesina 28-pin PWP PowerPAD™ package allowing for efficient heat dissipation. The
deviceis specified for operationat temperatures from –40°Cto 85°C.
