General DescriptionLP3944isan integrated device capableof independently
driving8 LEDs. This device also containsan internal preci-
sion oscillator that providesallthe necessary timing required
for driving each LED. Two prescaler registers along with two
PWM registers providea versatile duty cycle control. The
LP3944 contains the abilityto dim LEDsin SMBUS/I2C
applications whereitis requiredtocut downon bus traffic.
Traditionally,to dim LEDs usinga serial shift register suchas
74LS594/5 would requirea large amountof traffictobeon
the serial bus. LP3944 instead requires onlythe setupofthe
frequency and duty cyclefor each output pin. From thenon,
onlya single command fromthe hostis requiredto turn each
individual open drain output ON, OFF,orto cyclea pro-
grammed frequency and duty cycle. Maximum output sink
currentis25 mAperpin and 200mAper package.Any ports
not usedfor controlling the LEDs canbe usedfor general
purpose input/output expansion.
