General DescriptionThe LP2950 and LP2951 are micropower voltage regulators
with very low quiescent current (75µA typ.) and very low
dropout voltage (typ. 40mVat light loads and 380mVat
100mA). They are ideally suitedfor usein battery-powered
systems. Furthermore,the quiescent currentofthe LP2950/
LP2951 increases only slightlyin dropout, prolonging battery
life.
The LP2950-5.0is availablein the surface-mount D-Pak
package, andin the popular 3-pin TO-92 packagefor pin-
compatibility with older5V regulators. The 8-lead LP2951is
availablein plastic, ceramic dual-in-line, LLP,or metal can
packages and offers additional system functions.
One such featureisan error flag output which warnsofa low
output voltage, often dueto falling batteriesonthe input.It
maybe usedfora power-on reset.A second featureis the
logic-compatible shutdown input which enablesthe regulatorbe switchedon andoff. Also,the part maybe pin-strapped
fora 5V, 3V,or 3.3V output (dependingon the version),or
programmed from 1.24Vto 29V withan external pairof
resistors.
Careful designof the LP2950/LP2951 has minimizedall
contributionsto the error budget. This includesa tight initial
tolerance (.5% typ.), extremely good load and line regulation
(.05% typ.) anda very low output voltage temperature coef-
ficient, makingthe part usefulasa low-power voltage refer-
ence.
