General DescriptionThe LM78S40isa monolithic regulator subsystem consistingallthe active building blocks necessaryfor switching regu-
lator systems. The device consistsofa temperature com-
pensated voltage reference,a duty-cycle controllableoscilla-
torwithan active current limit circuit,an error amplifier, high
current, high voltage output switch,a power diodeandan
uncommitted operational amplifier.The devicecan driveex-
ternal NPNor PNP transistors when currentsin excessof
1.5Aor voltagesin excessof 40Vare required.The device
canbe usedfor step-down, step-upor inverting switching
regulatorsaswellasfor series pass regulators.It features
wide supply voltage range,low standby power dissipation,
high efficiencyandlow drift.Itis usefulforany stand-alone,
lowpart count switching systemand works extremelywellin
battery operated systems.
