General DescriptionThe LM3622isa charge controllerfor Lithium-Ion batteries.
This monolithic integrated circuit accurately controlsan ex-
ternal pass transistorfor precision Lithium-Ion battery charg-
ing. The LM3622 providesa constant voltageor constant
current (CVCC) configuration that changes,as necessary,to
optimally charge lithium-ion battery cells. Voltage charging
versions (4.1V, 4.2V, 8.2V, and 8.4V) are availablefor oneor
two cell battery packs andfor cokeor graphite anode battery
chemistry.
The LM3622 accepts input voltages from 4.5Vto 24V. Con-
troller accuracy over temperatureis ±30mV/cellforA grade
and ±50mV/cellfor the standard grade.No precision exter-
nal resistors are required. Furthermore, the LM3622’s pro-
prietary output voltage sensing circuit drains less than
200nA from the battery when the input sourceis discon-
nected.
The LM3622 circuitry includes functionsfor regulating the
charge voltage witha temperature compensated bandgap
reference and regulatingthe current withan external sense
resistor. The internal bandgap insures excellent controller
performance overthe operating temperature and input sup-
ply range.
The LM3622 can sink 15mA minimumatthe EXTpinto drive
the baseofan external PNP pass transistor.It also has
low-voltage battery threshold circuitry that removes this drive
whenthe cell voltage drops belowa preset limit. The LVSEL
pin programs this threshold voltageto either 2.7V/cellor
2.15V/cell. The low-voltage detection, whichisa user en-
abled feature, providesan output signal that canbe usedto
enablea "wakeup charge" source automaticallyto precon-
ditiona deeply discharged pack.
The LM3622is availableina standard 8-lead SOIC surface
mount package.
