Applications
General DescriptionThe LM3501isa fixed frequency synchronous step-up
DC/DC converterina small 8-bump thin micro SMD pack-
age. The LM3501is idealfor white LED applicationsfor
cellular phone back-lighting requiring low current and high
efficiency.Its fixed 1MHz operating frequency allowsthe use small, low ESR capacitorsas wellasa more predictable
frequency spectrum, whichis importantin cellular phone
applications. The LM3501 can drive2to4 white LEDsin
series froma single Li-Ion batteryor3 cell NiMH withno
external rectification diode. For white LED applications,a
single external resistoris usedto set the maximum LED
current. The white LED current can easilybe adjusted using external voltage signal froma DACor micro-controller.
The LM3501 uses special protection circuitryonthe output preventan overvoltage eventif the primary white LED
network shouldbe disconnected eliminating the needofan
extra protection Zener diode.In shutdown,the LM3501 dis-
connects the input and output creatinga true isolation pre-
venting any LED light from emitting over thefull input oper-
ating voltage range and temperature.
