General DescriptionThe LM3420 seriesof controllers are monolithic integrated
circuits designedfor charging and end-of-charge controlfor
Lithium-Ion rechargeable batteries. The LM3420is available five fixed voltage versionsfor one through fourcell charger
applications (4.2V, 8.2V/8.4V, 12.6V and 16.8V respec-
tively).
Includedina very small packageisan (internally compen-
sated)op amp,a bandgap reference,an NPN output tran-
sistor, and voltage setting resistors. The amplifier’s inverting
inputis externally accessiblefor loop frequency compensa-
tion. The outputisan open-emitter NPN transistor capableof
drivingupto15 mAof output current into external circuitry. trimmed precision bandgap reference utilizes temperature
drift curvature correctionfor excellent voltage stability over
the operating temperature range. Available withan initial
toleranceof 0.5%for theA grade version, and 1%for the
standard version, the LM3420 allowsfor precision end-of-
charge controlfor Lithium-Ion rechargeable batteries.
The LM3420is availableina sub-miniature 5-lead SOT23-5
surface mount package thus allowing very compact designs.
