General Description
The LM140A/LM140/LM340A/LM340/LM7800C monolith- 3-terminal positive voltage regulators employ internalcur-
rent-limiting, thermal shutdown and safe-area compensa-
tion, making them essentially indestructible.If adequate
heat sinkingis provided, theycan deliver over 1.0A output
current. Theyare intendedas fixed voltage regulatorsina
wide rangeof applications including local (on-card) regula-
tionfor eliminationof noiseand distribution problems asso-
ciatedwith single-point regulation. Inadditionto useas fixed
voltage regulators, these devicescanbe usedwith external
componentsto obtain adjustable output voltages andcur-
rents.
Considerable effortwas expendedtomakethe entire series regulators easytouseand minimizethe numberof exter-
nal components.Itisnot necessaryto bypassthe output,
although this does improve transient response. Inputby-
passingis needed onlyifthe regulatoris locatedfar from
the filter capacitorofthe power supply.
The5V, 12V,and15V regulator optionsare availableinthe
steel TO-3 power package. The LM340A/LM340/LM7800C
seriesis availablein theTO-220 plastic power package,and
the LM7805and LM7812are also availableinthe surface-
mount TO-263 package.
