DESCRIPTION

The LM135, LM235,LM335 are precision tempera-
ture sensors which canbe easily calibrated. They
operateasa 2-terminal Zener and the breakdown
voltageis directly proportionalto the absolute tem-
peratureat 10mV/oK. The circuit hasa dynamic im-
pedanceof less than 1Ω and operates withina
rangeof current from 450μAto 5mA without altera-
tionofits characteristics. Calibratedat +25oC, the
LM135,LM235, LM335 havea typical errorof less
than1oC overa 100oC temperature range. Unlike
other sensors, the LM135, LM235, LM335 havea
linear output.

APPLICATION HINTS
Thereis aneasy methodofcalibrating the devicefor
higher accuracies (see typical applications).
The single point calibration works because the out-
putof the LM135, LM235,LM335is proportionalto
the absolutetemperature with the extrapolatedout-
put ofsensorgoingto0Vat0oK (–273.15oC). Errors outputvoltageversustemperature areonly slope.
Thusa calibrationof the slopeat one temperature
corrects errorsatall temperatures.
The outputof the circuit (calibratedor not) canbe
givenby the equation: VOT= VOTOxT
whereTis the unknowntemperature andTOis the
reference temperature(inoK).
Nominally the outputis calibratedat 10mV/oK.
Precautionsshouldbe takento ensure goodsens-
ing accuracy.Asin thecase ofalltemperaturessen-
sors, self heating can decrease accuracy. The
LM135, LM235, LM335 should operate witha low
current,but sufficientto drive thesensorandits cali-
brationcircuitto their maximum operating tempera-
ture. thesensoris usedin surroundings wherethe ther-
mal resistaneis constant,the errors dueto self heat-
ing canbe externally calibrated. Thisis possibleif
the circuitis biased witha temperature stable cur-
rent. Heating will thenbe proportionalto zener volt-
age and thereforetemperature.In thisway theerror
dueto self heatingis proportionalto the absolute
temperatureas scale factor errors.
