Typically,no capacitors are needed unless the device• Microprocessor Supplies situated more than6 inches from the input filter
capacitors,in which case an input bypassis needed.
Typical Application optional output capacitor canbe addedto improve
transient response. The adjustment terminal can be
bypassedto achieve very high ripple-rejection ratios
that are difficultto achieve with standard 3-terminal
regulators.
Because the LM317A regulatoris floating and detects
only the input-to-output differential voltage, supplies several hundred volts can be regulatedas long as
the maximum input-to-output differential is not
exceeded. Exceeding the maximum input-to-output
deferential will resultin short-circuiting the output. connecting a fixed resistor between the
adjustment pin and output, the LM317A can be also
used asa precision current regulator. Supplies with
electronic shutdown canbe achievedby clamping the
adjustment terminalto ground, which programs the*Neededif deviceis more than6 inches from filter outputto 1.25V where most loads draw little current.capacitors.
