General DescriptionThe LM2706 DC-DC converteris optimizedfor poweringRF
power amplifiers (PAs) froma single Lithium-Ion cell.It may
alsobe usedin many other applications.It steps downan
input voltage from 2.7Vto 5.5Vtoa variable output from
1.5Vto 3.25Vupto 300 mA. Output voltageis set usinga
VCON analog inputfor controlling power levels and efficiency theRF PA.An internal bypass switch allows direct con-
nectiontothe batteryfor maximum powertotheRF PA.
The device offers4 modesfor mobile phones and similarRF applications. Fixed-frequency PWM mode minimizesRF
interference. Forced Bypass mode turnsonan internal by-
pass switchto power thePA directly fromthe battery. Auto-
matic bypass mode minimizes dropoutby turningon the
bypass switch when the battery decaysto near the output
voltage. Shutdown mode turns the deviceoff and reduces
battery consumptionto0.1µA (typ.).
The device also offers internal synchronous rectificationfor
high efficiency (95% typat 3.25 VOUT, 200 mA, 3.9 VIN).
Current limit and thermal overload protection protects the
device and system during fault conditions.
The LM2706is availableina 10-pin lead free micro SMD
package. This packaging uses National’s chip-scale micro
SMD technology and offersthe smallest possible size.A high
switching frequency (600 kHz) allows useof tiny surface-
mount components. Only three small external surface-mount
components,an inductor and two ceramic capacitors, are
required.
