General DescriptionThe LM2639 providesan attractive solutionfor power sup-
pliesof high power microprocessors (suchas Pentium II™,
MII™,K6™-2, K6™-3, etc.) exhibiting ultra fast load tran-
sients. Comparedtoa conventional single-phase supply,an
LM2639 based multi-phase supply distributes the thermal
and electrical loading among componentsin multiple phases
and greatly reducesthe corresponding stressin each com-
ponent. The LM2639 canbe programmedto control eithera
3-phase converterora 4-phase converter. Phase shift
amongthe phasesis 120˚inthe caseof three phase and90˚
with four-phase. Because the power channels are outof
phase, there canbe significant ripple cancellationfor both
the input and output current, resultingin reduced input and
output capacitor size. Dueto the nominal operating fre-
quencyof2 MHz per phase,the sizeofthe output inductors
canbe greatly reduced which resultsina much faster load
transient response anda dramatically shrunk output capaci-
tor bank. Microprocessor power supplies withall surface
mount components canbe easily built.
The internal high speed transconductance amplifier guaran-
tees good dynamic performance. The output drive voltages
canbe adjusted througha resistor dividerto control switch-
ing lossin the external FETs.
The internal master clock frequencyofupto8 MHzissetby external reference resistor.An external clockof10 MHz
can alsobe usedto drivethe chipto achieve frequency con-
trol and multi-chip operation.
The LM2639 also provides input under-voltage lock-out with
hysteresis and input over-current protection.
