General DescriptionThe LM2594/LM2594HV seriesof regulators are monolithic
integrated circuits that provideallthe active functionsfora
step-down (buck) switching regulator, capableof drivinga
0.5A load with excellent line and load regulation. These de-
vices are availablein fixed output voltagesof 3.3V, 5V, 12V,
andan adjustable output version, and are packagedina
8-lead DIP anda 8-lead surface mount package.
Requiringa minimum numberof external components, these
regulators are simpleto use and feature internal frequency
compensation†,a fixed-frequency oscillator, and improved
line and load regulation specifications.
The LM2594/LM2594HV series operatesata switching fre-
quencyof 150 kHz thus allowing smaller sized filter compo-
nents than what wouldbe needed with lower frequency
switching regulators. Becauseofits high efficiency,the cop-
per tracesonthe printed circuit board are normally the only
heat sinking needed. standard seriesof inductors (both through hole and sur-
face mount types) are available from several different manu-
facturers optimizedfor use withthe LM2594/LM2594HV se-
ries. This feature greatly simplifies the design of
switch-mode power supplies.
Other features includea guaranteed ±4% toleranceon out-
put voltage underall conditionsof input voltage and output
load conditions, and ±15%on the oscillator frequency. Ex-
ternal shutdownis included, featuring typically 85μA
standby current. Self protection features includea two stage
frequency reducing current limitforthe output switch andan
over temperature shutdownfor complete protection under
fault conditions.
