General Description
The LM2594 seriesof regulatorsare monolithic integrated
circuitsthat provideallthe active functionsfora step-down
(buck) switching regulator, capableof drivinga 0.5A load
with excellentline and load regulation. These devicesare
availablein fixed output voltagesof 3.3V,5V, 12V,andan
adjustable output version,andare packagedina 8-leadDIP
anda 8-lead surface mount package.
Requiringa minimum numberof external components,
these regulatorsare simpletouse and feature internalfre-
quencycompensation², afixed-frequency oscillator,andim-
provedlineand load regulation specifications.
The LM2594 series operatesata switching frequencyof
150kHz thus allowing smaller sized filter components than
what wouldbe neededwith lower frequency switching regu-
lators. Becauseofits high efficiency,the copper traceson
the printed circuit boardare normallythe only heat sinking
needed. standard seriesof inductors (both through holeandsur-
facemount types)are availablefrom severaldifferent manu-
facturers optimizedforuse withthe LM2594 series. This
feature greatly simplifiesthe designof switch-mode power
supplies.
Otherfeatures includea guaranteed g4% tolerance onout-
put voltage underall conditionsof input voltageand output
load conditions,and g15%onthe oscillator frequency.Ex-
ternal shutdownis included, featuring typically85mA stand- current.Self protection features includeatwo stagefre-
quency reducing current limitforthe output switchandan
over temperature shutdownfor complete protection under
fault conditions.
