APPLICATION INFORMATIONThe LM317L provides an internal reference voltageof 1.25V between the output and adjustments
terminals. Thisis usedto seta constant current flow acrossan external resistor divider (see fig.4), giving output voltage VOof:O =V REF(1+R2/R1)+I ADJR2The device was designedto minimize the term IADJ (100μA max) andto maintainit very constant with line
and load changes. Usually, the error term IADJ ×R2 canbe neglected.To obtain the previous requirement,
all the regulator quiescent currentis returnedto the output terminal, imposinga minimum load current
condition.If the loadis insufficient, the output voltage will rise.
Since the LM317Lisa floating regulator and "sees" only the input-to-output differential voltage, supplies very high voltage with respectto ground can be regulated as long as the maximum input-to-output
differentialis not exceeded. Furthermore, programmable regulator are easily obtainable and, by
connectinga fixed resistor between the adjustment and output, the device can be usedasa precision
current regulator.In orderto optimize the load regulation, the current set resistorR1 (see fig.4) shouldbe
tiedas closeas possibleto the regulator, while the ground terminalofR2 shouldbe near the groundof the
loadto provide remote ground sensing.
