General DescriptionThe LM1949 linear integrated circuit servesasan excellent
controlof fuel injector drive circuitryin modern automotive
systems. TheICis designedto controlan external power
NPN Darlington transistor that drivesthe high current injec-
tor solenoid. The current requiredto opena solenoidis
several times greater than the current necessaryto merely
holdit open; therefore, the LM1949,by directly sensing the
actual solenoid current, initially saturates the driver until the
“peak” injector currentis four times thatofthe idleor “hold-
ing” current (Figure 3–Figure7). This guarantees openingof
the injector. The currentis then automatically reducedtothe
sufficient holding levelfor the durationof the input pulse.In
this way,the total power consumedbythe systemis dramati-
cally reduced. Also,a higher degreeof correlationof fuelto
the input voltage pulse(or duty cycle)is achieved, since
opening and closing delaysof the solenoidwillbe reduced.
Normally powered froma5V± 10% supply, theICis typi-
cally operable over the entire temperature range (−55˚Cto
+125˚C ambient) with suppliesas lowas3 volts. Thisis
particularly useful under “cold crank” conditions when the
battery voltage may drop low enoughto deregulatethe 5-volt
power supply.
