General DescriptionThe LM109 seriesare complete5V regulators fabricatedon single silicon chip. Theyare designedfor local regulation digital logic cards, eliminatingthe distribution problems
association with single-point regulation. The devicesare
availablein two standard transistor packages.In the
solid-kovar TO-5 header,itcan deliver output currentsinex-
cessof200 mA,if adequate heat sinkingis provided. With
the TO-3 power package,the available output currentis
greater than1A.
The regulatorsare essentially blowout proof. Currentlimiting includedtolimitthe peak output currenttoa safe value.In
addition, thermal shutdownis providedto keeptheIC from
overheating.If internal dissipation becomestoo great,the
regulatorwill shut downto prevent excessive heating.
Considerable effort was expendedto make these devices
easytouseandto minimizethe numberof external compo-
nents.Itisnot necessaryto bypassthe output, althoughthis
does improve transient response somewhat. Input bypass-
ingis needed, however,ifthe regulatoris located veryfar
fromthe filter capacitorofthe power supply. Stabilityis also
achievedby methods thatprovide very good rejection ofloadline transientsasare usually seenwith TTL logic.
Althoughdesigned primarily asa fixed-voltage regulator,the
outputofthe LM109 seriescanbesetto voltages above5V, shown.Itis alsopossibletousethe circuitsasthe control
elementin precision regulators, taking advantageofthe
good current-handling capability andthe thermal overload
protection.
