DESCRIPTIONThese circuits are monolithic J-FET input operational
amplifiers incorporating well matched,high voltage
J-FETon the same chip with standard bipolar transis-
tors.
This amplifiers feature low input bias and offset cur-
rents, low input offsetvoltage and input offset voltage
drift,coupledwith offsetadjust whichdoesnotdegrade
driftor common-mode rejection.
The devicesare also designed forhigh slewrate, wide
bandwidth,extremelyfastsettlingtime,lowvoltageand
current noise anda low1/f noise level.

Notes:1. Unless otherwise specifiedthe absolute maximum negative inputvoltageis equal tothe negative power supply voltage. The temperature coefficientofthe adjusted input offset voltage changes onlya small amount (0.5μV/oC typically) foreachmV adjustment fromits original unadjusted value. Common-mode rejectionandopenloop voltagegain arealsounaffectedby
offset adjustment. The input bias currentsare junction leakage currents which approximately doublefor every10oC increasein thejunction
temperature Tamb. Duetolimitedproduction test time, the inputbias currentmeasuredis correlatedto junction temperature. anormal operation thejunction temperature rises above theambient temperature asa resultof internal power dissipation,
Ptot-Tamb =Tamb+Rth(j-a)xPtotwhere Rth(j-a)isthe thermal resistance from junction toambient. Useofa heatsink isrecommended inputcurrents areto bekepttoa minimum. Supply voltage rejectionis measuredfor both supply magnitudes increasingor decreasing simultaneously,in accordance with
commonpractise. Settlingtimeis defined here, fora unity gain inverter connection using 2kΩ resistorsforthe LF155, LF156 series.Itis thetime
requiredforthe errorvoltage(the voltage atthe inverting inputpinon theamplifier)to settleto within0.01%ofits finalvalue from

The LF155, LF156, LF157 series areop ampswithJ-
FETinput transistors. TheseJFETs havelarge reverse
breakdown voltagesfromgatetosourceor drain elimi-
natingtheneed ofclampsacrossthe inputs.Therefore
large differential input voltagescan easilybe accom-
modatedwithoutalarge increaseof inputcurrents.The
maximum differential input voltageis independentof
thesupplyvoltage.However,neitherof thenegativein-
put voltagesshouldbe allowedto exceedthenegative
supplyas this will cause large currentsto flow which
canresultina destroyedunit. Exceeding the negative
common-modelimit oneitherinputwillcauseareversal thephasetotheoutputandforce the amplifier output the correspondinghighor lowstate. Exceedingthe
negativecommon-mode limit on bothinputs will force
theamplifieroutputtoa highstate.Inneithercasedoes latch occur since raising the input back within the
common-mode rangeagain puts theinput stage and
thustheamplifierina normal operatingmode. Exceed-
ingthepositivecommon-modelimit onasingleinputwill
not changethephaseof the output however,if bothin-
putsexceedthelimit, theoutputof theamplifier willbe
forcedtoahighstate.Theseamplifierswill operatewith
the common-modeinput voltageequalto the positive
supply. In fact, the common-modevoltagecanex-
ceedthepositivesupplybyapproximately100mVinde-
pendentof supply volt-age and over thefull operat-
ingtemperaturerange.The positive suplly can there-
forebe used asareferenceonaninputas, forexample, asupply currentmonitor and/orlimiter. Precautions-
shouldbe takentoensurethatthepowersupply forthe
integratedcircuit neverbecomesre-versedin polarity
orthatthe unit isnotinadvertentlyin-stalledbackwardsa socketasan unilimited current surge throughthe
resultingforward diode within theIC couldcausefusin-
goftheinternalconductorsandresultina destroyedunit.
Becausetheseamplifiers are JFET ratherthan MOS-
FET inputop amps theydo not require special han-
dling.
Allofthebiascurrentsintheseamplifiersaresetby FET
current sources. The drain currentsfor the amplifiers
are therefore essentially independentof supply volt-
ages.
Aswith most amplifiers, care should betakenwith lead
dress, componentsplacement and supply decoupling
inorderto ensurestability. Forexample, resistors from
theoutputtoan input shouldbe placedwith thebody
closeto theinputtominimiz ”pickup”andmaximize the
frequencyof the feedbackpoleby minimizing the ca-
pacitancefromthe inputto ground. feedback poleis createdwhen the feedbackaround
any amplifieris resistive. The parallel resistance and
capacitancefromtheinputof thedevice(usuallythein-
vertinginput)toacgroundsetthefrequencyofthepole.In
many instances the frequencyof this poleis much
greaterthanthe expected3 dBfrequencyof the closed
loopgainandconsequentlythereisnegligible effecton
stability margin. However,if the feedback poleis less
than approximately six time the expected3 dB fre-
quencyaleadcapacitorshould beplaced from the out-
putto theinputof theop amp.Thevalue ofthat added
capacitorshouldbe such that the RC time constantof
this capacitorand the resistanceit parallelsis greater
thanor equalto the original feedbackpole time con-
stant.
