Appropriate combinationsof two pins define the
three modesof the ST SLIC, that are: Stand-by(SBY) Conversation (CVS), Normal and Reverse pola-

The main difference between Stand-by and Power

voltage battery VB–(– 48V)is reduced but the
L3000S DC feedingand monitoring circuits are still
active. In PD the power consumptionon VB-is re-

The Linevoltage inon Hookconditionisjustthe bat-
teryvoltage minus thevoltagedrop(approx.15V)of
the outputstage amplifiers (see Fig.1).

are two possible line conditions where the SLICis
expectedtobein stand-bymode: ON-HOOK (Iline< 5mA). Normal on-hook
condition. OFF-HOOK (Iline> 7mA).Handsetis unhooked,
the SLICis waiting for commandto activate
conversation.
Whenthe SLICisin stand-bymode, the powerdis-
sipationof L3000Sdoes not exceed 120mW (from
-48V) eventually increasedofa certain amountif
some currentis flowing into the line.
The power dissipationof L3030in thesame condi-
tion,is typically 120mW.

L3030 Serial Digital Interface has the first two bits
(BIT0R and BIT1R) equalto ”0”.
Settingto0all the8 bitsof thecommandsentto the
digital interfaceof L3030, the bias currentsof both
L3000S and L3030 are reduced and only some
partsof the two circuits are active similarlyto the
stand-by mode;in this situation, named power-
down denial, the line sensors are disabled
(ON/OFF-HOOK line conditions cannotbe recogni-
zed)and the currentsuppliedto the lineis limitedat
0.25mA.

Battery reverse can take place either beforeor du-

Inconversationmode,onrequestof controlproces-
sor, whateverconditionis set (normalor boost bat-
tery, director reverse polarity), you can inject the
12kHz(or16kHz)signal (permanentlyappliedatthe
pin33 with 950mVrmstyp. amplitude),as metering
pulses.A patentedautomatic control system adjust
the levelof the metering signal, across the line,to
2Vrms setting BIT3=0, orto 5Vrms setting BIT3=; this, regardlessof the lineimpedance. Moreover
the metering signalis rampedat the beginningand theendof eachpulseto preventundesirableclic-
king noise; the slopeis determinedby the valueof
CINT (see the external componentlistof L3030).
The SLIC also provides,in the transmit direction
(fromlineto 4-wireside),an amplifiertoinsert anex-
ternalnotchfilter (series resonator)for suppressing
the 12/16kHz residualsignal.
Fig.4 showsa suggestednotch Filterconfiguration.
The meteringpulsescanbe injected witha DC line
current equalto zero (ON-HOOK Operation). teletaxis not used the notchfiltercanbe replaceda 1KΩ resistor.

obligedtobe equalto ZML andto Zline, but they
both maybe multipliedbya factor (upto ten)soal-

control unit L3030 presets the L3000Sto operate
between– 48V(– 60V)and+ 72V(+ 60V) battery.
Then,settingBIT1 =1,a lowlevelsignal(0.285Vrms
with frequencyrange 16-66Hz) appliedto pin 41,is
amplified and injectedin balancedmodeto the line
throughL3000Switha superimposedDC voltageof
24V. The impedanceto the lineis givenby the two
external resistors and the 24V DC polarity can only
bedirect.
Thefirstandthelastringingcycles aresynchronized L3030so that ringing always starts and stopsat
zero crossing. Ring trip detectionis performed au-
tonomouslybytheSLIC,withoutanyparticularcom-
mand, usinga patentedsystem; when handsetis
lifted, SLIC suspends the ringing signal just remai-
ning intheringingmode.Inthiscondition,thecontrol
unit L3030 checks that the loopis closedfora time
equalto two periodsof the ringingsignal;if the clo-
sureis confirmed,a flag (BIT0T=1)is set and the
SLICwaits the new command from the controlpro-
cessor.Whereas the loop closureis not confirmed,
theringingsignalis newlyappliedto theline,without
setting BIT0T.
DIGITAL INTERFACE
Functional DescriptionThe L3030 states and functions are controlledby
centralprocessorthrough five wires defininga digi-
tal interface.Itispossibleto selecttheinterfacewor-

SerialModeThe five wiresof the digitalinterface havethe follo-
wing functions: clock (DCLK), enteringat pin21 data in/dataout (DIO), exchangedat pin20 input/outputselect (EIA), enteringat pin18 chip select (NCS), enteringat pin19 changeNCS frominto out (CI), enteringat pin26
(note1)
The maximum clock frequencyis 600Khz.
When EIAsignalislow dataare transferredfromthe
card controller into I/O registersof the L3030 selec-
tedby NCS signal tiedat low level; then data are
latched forexecution. In this phasea complete 8bit
wordis loaded intointernalregisterand consequen-
tly NCS signal must remain low for the correspon-
ding8 clock pulses (DCLK). The EIA signal must
remainat lowlevelatleastfor thetimein whichNCS
signal remain low. The deviceload datain inputre-
gister during the positive edgeof clock signal
(DCLK) and store thecontentsof theregisteron the
positive edgeof NCS signal.
When EIA signalis high data are transferred from
the L3030 selectedby NCS tiedto low levelto the
card controller. The L3030 statusis describedby
five bits containedin the output register; the NCS
signalcan remainlowforfiveorlessclockpulsesde-
