incorporatedto permit positiveor negative edge-
triggered monostable multivibrator action with retrig-
gering and external counting options. Inputs include
+TRIGGER-TRIGGER, ASTABLE, ASTABLE, RE-
TRIGGER,and EXTERNAL RESET. Buffered out-
puts areQ,Q, and OSCILLATOR.Inall modesof
operation, anexternal capacitor mustbe connected
between C-Timingand RC-Common terminals, and externalresistor mustbe connectedbetween the
R-Timing and RC-Common terminals. Foroperating

APPLICATION INFORMATION- CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
Astable operationis enabledbya high levelon the
ASTABLE input. The periodof the square waveat
theQ andQ Outputsin this modeof operationisa
functionof the external components employed.
”True” input pulseson the ASTABLE inputor ”Com-
plement” pulses onthe ASTABLE inputallow the cir-
cuitto be used asa gatable multivibrator. The
OSCILLATOR output period willbe halfof theQ ter-
minal outputin the astable mode. However,a 50%
duty cycleis not guaranteedat this output. In the
monostable mode, positive-edge triggeringis ac-
complishedby applicationofa leading-edge pulse the +TRIGGER input anda low levelto the –TRI-
GGER input. For negative-edge triggering,a trail-
ing-edge pulseis appliedto the –TRIGGER anda
high levelis appliedto the+TRIGGER. Input pulses
maybeof any duration relativeto the output pulse.
The multivibrator canbe retriggered (on the leading
edge only)by applyinga common pulseto both the
RETRIGGER and +TRIGGER inputs. In this mode
the output pulse remains highas longas the input
pulse periodis shorter than the period determined the RC components. An external countdown op-
tion canbe implementedby coupling ”Q”toan ex-
ternal ”N” counter and resetting the counter with the
trigger pulse. The counter output pulseis fed back the ASTABLE input and hasa duration equalto times the periodof the multivibrator.A high level the EXTERNAL RESET input assuresno output
pulse during an ”ON” power condition. This input
can alsobe activatedto terminate the output pulse any time.In the monostable mode,a high-levelor
power-on reset pulse, mustbe appliedto the EX-
TERNAL RESET whenever VDDis applied.- ASTABLE MODE
The following analysis presents worst-case vari-
ations from unit-to-unitasa functionof transfer-volt-
age (VTR) shift (33%– 67% VDD)for free-running

Max: VTR= 0.67 VDDtA= 4.62 RC

ation willbe(+ 5.0%,– 0.0%) additionto variations from unit-to-unit, the astable
period may varyasa functionof frequency withre-
spectto VDD and temperature.- MONOSTABLE MODE
The following analysis presents worst-case vari-
ations from unit-to-unitasa functionof transfer-volt-
age (VTR) shift (33%– 67% VDD) for one-shot
(monostable) operation.
VTRt1=– RCIn 2VDD
VDD –VTRt2=– RCIn 2VDD –VTR
(VTR)(VDD –VTR)tM =(t1 +t2)=– RCIn (2 VDD –VTR)(2 VDD)
MONOSTABLEWAVEFORMS.
WheretM= monostable mode pulse width. Values
fortM areas follows:
Typ: VTR= 0.5 VDD tM= 2.48 RC
Min: VTR= 0.33 VDD tM= 2.71 RC
Max: VTR= 0.67 VDD tM= 2.48 RC
Thusif tM= 2.48 RC is used, the maximum vari-
ation willbe(+ 9.3%,– 0.0%).
Note:In the astable mode, the first positive half
cyclehasa durationofTM; succeeding dur-
ations are tA/2. additionto variations from unitto unit, the mono-
stable pulse width may varyasa functionof fre-
quency with respectto VDD and temperature.- RETRIGGER MODE
The
HCC/HCF4047B canbe usedin the retrigger
modeto extend theoutput-pulse duration, ortocom-
pare the frequencyofan input signal withthatof the
internal oscillator. In the retrigger mode the input
pulse isappliedto terminals8 and12, and the output taken from terminal10or 11.As shownin fig.A
normal monostable actionis obtained when onere-
trigger pulseis applied. Extended pulse durationis
obtained when more than one pulseis applied. For
two input pulses, tRE =t1’+t1 +2t2. For more than
two pulses, tRE (Q OUTPUT) terminatesat some
variable timetD after the terminationof the last re-
trigger pulse.tDis variable because tRE (Q OUT-
PUT) terminates after the second positive edgeof
the oscillator output appearsat flip-flop4 (see logic
diagram).
