Fig.2: BASIC APPLICATION
The applicationsof the lighter using the capaci-
tance discharge topology operatein2 phases:
PHASE 1The energy coming from the mainsis stored into
the capacitorC. For that, the AC voltageis rectified the diode Ds.
PHASE 2 the endof the phase1, the voltage across the
capacitorC reaches the avalanche thresholdof
the zener. Thena current flows through the gateof
the thyristorTh which fires.
The firingof the thyristor causes an alternating
currentto flow through the capacitorC.
The positive partsof this current flow throughC, and the primaryof the HV transformer.
The negative partsof the current flow throughC, and the primatyof the HV transformer.

COMPONENT CHOICE
RS RESISTOR CALCULATIONTheRs resistor allows,in addition with the capacitorC, the spark frequencytobe adjusted and the cur-
rent from the mainstobe limited. Its value shall allow the thyristorThto fire evenin worst case condi-
tions. In this borderline case, the system must fire with the lowest valueof RMS mains voltage while
the breakdown voltage and currentof the FLC areat the maximum.

Fig. 3: Spark frequency versus Rs and C
The couple Rs/C canbe chosen with the previous
curve. Keepin mind the Rs maximum limit for
which the system would not work when the AC
mainsis minimum. The next curve shows the be-
havior with Rs=15kΩ and C=1μF.

PEAK CURRENT LIMITThis componentis designedto withstand
ITRM= 240A fora pulse durationof 10μs for an
ambient temperatureof 120°Cin repetitive surge
(see note1, page2).
The curveof peak current versus the pulse
duration allows usto verifyif the application within the FLC operating limit.
POWER LOSSES (For 10μs, see note1) evaluate the power losses, please use the following equations:
For the thyristor:P= 1.18x IT(AV)+ 0.035I2 T(RMS)
For the diode:P= 0.67x IF(AV)+ 0.106I2 F(RMS)
