EFS STARLIGHT-KIT APPLICATION NOTE Starterisa bi-directional switch which performs two functions: the preheatof the tube, the ignitionof the tube.
THE AC POWER SWITCH: FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTIONDuring the preheat period, the ASDis fully
conducting. The tube lampis short circuitedby the
starter, and the current flows throughits filaments. these conditions, the lamp can not light up, but
the temperatureof the lamp electrodes increases. the endof the preheat period, lamp filaments
are warm enoughto emit electronsin the gas and permit the lamp ignitionin good conditions. The
ASD switchesoff the preheating current.At this
moment, the ballastis equivalenttoa current
generator (I=ISO, ISO= Switched Off current). As
the ASD switches off, the starter voltage
increases. The amplitudeof this high voltage spike then clamped by the ASD (VBR′1350 V). As
the starter and the lamp arein parallel, the striking
pulse is directly applied to the lamp. The
electromagnetic energy of the ballastis then
discharged through the lamp and the ASD.
Striking pulseThe AC SWITCH merges an auxiliary power
supply for the driver,a power clamping device
(1350V) anda bi-directional switch with his
execution pilot block.

EFSPresent solutions work witha unidirectional
switch, like MOS transistorsor GTO (Gate Turn
Off thyristor).Asa starterisa bi-directional switch, isnecessaryto usea rectifier bridge(4 diodesof
1500V). More,2or3 diodesin series with the
GTO are requiredto get the necessary switch off
effect, and the wholeis controlled with an analog
timer built arounda small SCR.
The interestofa bi-directional switch arises itself: drastic reductionof the numberof components,
andof course,a reductionof power losses (only1
forward voltage insteadof5). lamp requiresa minimum energy leveltobe ignited, but this energy depends especiallyon the lamp
temperature. The lower the temperatureis, the more energetic the lamp strikeis.
This energy storedin the ballastis directly proportionalto the Switched Off current IE LI( . )= . other words, the required energy andof course the ISO level, are maximum for the minimum
temperature. Results basedon experiments show thatitis necessaryto switchoffa currentof 350 mAto
strikea 58W tubeat -30°C (witha voltage amplitude clampedat 1200V and starting aid).
Therefore, the best wayto strikea tube independentlyof the temperatureisto keep the maximum ISO level
forall the temperature range. Unfortunately, the solutionis notso simpleto implement because the energy
levelat ambientor warm temperature wouldbe much important: the lamp wouldbe ignited, but the lamp
lifetime wouldbe shortened. Thisis why oneof the innovationsof the ASDisto modulate the striking
energy versus temperature (see feature hereafter).
LAMP IGNITION FEATURE:For freezing temperatures, the ISO levelis maintainedat 350 mA, andfor positive temperatures, the ISO
level decreases slowly.
