Geode™ CS5530 I/O Companion
Multi-Function South Bridge
General DescriptionThe CS5530 I/O companionis designedto workin con-
junction with the GXLV and GXm series processors;all
membersof the National Semiconductor® Geode™ family products. Together the Geode processor and CS5530
providea system-level solution well suited for the high
performance needsofa hostof devices suchas digital
set-top boxes and thin client devices. Dueto the low
power consumptionofa GXLV processor, this solution
satisfies the needsof battery powered devices suchas
National’s WebPAD™ system,a Geode GXLV proces-
sor/CS5530 based design. Also, thermal designis eased
allowingfor fanless system design.
The CS5530I/O companionisa PCI-to-ISA bridge (South
Bridge), ACPI-compliant chipset that providesA T/ISA
style functionality. To those familiar with PC architecture
this enablesa quicker understandingof the CS5530’s
architecture. The device contains state-of-the-art power
management that enables systems, especially battery
powered systems,to significantly reduce power consump-
tion.
Audiois supported through PCI bus master engines which
connectto an AC97 compatible codec such as the
National Semiconductor LM4548.If industry standard
audiois required,a combinationof hardware and software
called Virtual System Architecture® (VSA™) technologyis
provided.
The GXLV processor’s graphics/video outputis connected the CS5530. The CS5530 graphics/video support
includesa PLL that generates the DOT clockfor the GXLV
processor (where the graphics controlleris located), video
acceleration hardware, gamma RAM plus three DACsfor
RGB outputto CRT, and digital RGB that canbe directly
connectedto TFT panelsor NTSC/PAL encoders. The
digital RGB output can alsobe connectedto the National
Semiconductor CS9210 Graphics Companion(a DSTN
Controller)for DSTN panel support. The CS9210is alsoa
memberof the Geode product family.
