General DescriptionThe bq2052 Lithium Primary Gas
GaugeICis intended for bat-
tery-packor in-system installation maintainan accurate recordof
available battery capacity. TheIC
monitorsa voltage drop acrossa
sense resistor connectedin series
with the cellsto determine dis-
charge activityof the battery. The
bq2052 applies compensationsfor
battery temperature and discharge
rateto the available charge counter provide available capacity infor-
mation acrossa wide rangeof oper-
ating conditions.
Compensated available capacity
maybe directly indicated usingan
LED display. The LED displayis
programmable and canbe config-
uredas two, four,or five segments.
These segments are usedto depict
available battery capacity. The
bq2052 supportsa single-wire serial
communications linktoan external
micro-controller. The link allows
the micro-controllerto read and
write the internal registersof the
bq2052. The internal registersin-
clude available battery capacity,
voltage, temperature, current, and
battery status. The controller may
also overwrite someof the bq2052
gas gauge data registers.
The bq2052 can operate from the
batteriesin the pack. The REF out-
put andan external FET providea
simple, inexpensive voltage regula-
torto supply powerto the circuit
fromthe cells.
