General DescriptionThe bq2050H Lithium Ion Power
Gauge™ICis intendedfor battery-
packor in-system installationto
maintainan accurate recordof
available battery capacity. TheIC
monitorsa voltage drop acrossa
sense resistor connectedin series
between the negative battery termi-
nal and groundto determine
charge and discharge activityof
the battery. Compensationsfor bat-
tery temperature, self discharge,
and rateof discharge are appliedto
the charge counterto provide avail-
able capacity information acrossa
wide rangeof operating conditions.
Battery capacityis automaticallyre-
calibrated,or “learned,”in the
courseofa discharge cycle from full
toempty.
Nominal available capacity maybe
directly indicated usinga five-
segment LED display. These seg-
ments are usedto graphically indi-
cate available capacity. The
bq2050H also supportsa simple
single-line bidirectional serial linkan external processor (common
ground). The 5kb HDQ bus interface
reduces communications overheadthe external microcontroller.
Internal registers include available
capacity, temperature, scaled avail-
able energy, battery ID, battery
status, and Li-Ion charge FET
status. The external processor may
also overwrite someof the bq2050H
power gauge data registers.
The bq2050H can operate from the
batteriesinthe pack. The REF out-
put andan external transistor allow simple, inexpensive voltage regu-
latorto supply powerto the circuit
fromthe cells.
