General DescriptionThe bq2050 Lithium Ion Power
Gauge™ICis intendedfor battery-
packor in-system installationto
maintainan accurate recordof
available battery capacity. TheIC
monitorsa voltage drop acrossa
sense resistor connectedin series
between the negative battery termi-
nal and groundto determine
charge and discharge activityof
the battery. Compensationsfor bat-
tery temperature and rateof charge discharge are appliedto the
charge, discharge, and self-discharge
calculationsto provide availableca-
pacity information acrossa wide
rangeof operating conditions. Bat-
tery capacityis automatically recali-
brated,or “learned,”in the courseof discharge cycle fromfullto empty.
Nominal available capacity maybe
directly indicated usinga five-
segment LED display. These seg-
ments are usedto graphically indi-
cate available capacity. The bq2050
supportsa simple single-line bidi-
rectional serial linktoan external
processor (common ground). The
bq2050 outputs battery information responseto external commands
overthe serial link.
The bq2050 may operate directly
from one cell (VBAT> 3V). With the
REF output andan external transis-
tor,a simple, inexpensive regulator
canbe builtfor systems with more
than oneseries cell.
Internal registers include available
capacity, temperature, scaled avail-
able energy, battery ID, battery
status, and programming pin set-
tings.To support subassembly test-
ing, the outputs may alsobe con-
trolled. The external processor may
also overwrite someof the bq2050
power gauge data registers.
