General DescriptionThe bq2012 Gas GaugeICis in-
tendedfor battery-packor in-system
installationto maintainan accurate
recordof available battery charge.
TheIC monitorsa voltage drop
acrossa sense resistor connectedin
series between the negative battery
terminal and groundto determine
charge and discharge activityof the
battery.
Self-dischargeof NiMH and NiCd
batteriesis estimated basedonan
internal timer and temperature sen-
sor. Compensationsfor battery tem-
perature and rateof chargeor dis-
charge are appliedto the charge,
discharge, and self-discharge calcu-
lationsto provide available charge
information acrossa wide rangeof
operating conditions. Battery capac-
ityis automatically recalibrated,or
“learned,”in the courseofa dis-
charge cycle fromfullto empty.
The bq2012 includesa charge con-
trol output that, when used with
other full-charge safety termination
methods, can providea cost-effective
meansof controlling charge based
onthe battery's charge state.
Nominal available charge maybedi-
rectly indicated usinga five-or six-
segment LED display. These seg-
ments are usedto graphically indi-
cate nominal available charge.
The bq2012 supportsa simple
single-line bidirectional serial linkto external processor (common
ground). The bq2012 outputs battery
informationin responseto external
commandsoverthe serial link.
Internal registers include available
charge, temperature, capacity, battery
ID, battery status, and programming
pin settings.To support subassembly
testing, the outputs may alsobe con-
trolled. The external processor may
also overwrite someofthe bq2012 gas
gauge dataregisters.
The bq2012 may operate directly
from threeor four cells. With the
REF output andan external transis-
tor,a simple, inexpensive regulator
canbe builtto provide VCC acrossa
greaternumber ofcells.
