General Description

The bq2002 and bq2002/F Fast-Charge
ICsare low-cost CMOS battery-charge
controllers providing reliable charge
terminationfor both NiCd and NiMH
battery applications. Controllinga
current-limitedor constant-current
supply allows the bq2002/Ftobe the
basisfora cost-effective stand-aloneor
system-integrated charger. The
bq2002/F integrates fast charge with
optional top-off and pulsed-trickle con-
trolina singleICfor charging oneor
more NiCd orNiMH batterycells.
Fast chargeis initiatedon application the charging supplyor batteryre-
placement. For safety, fast chargeis
inhibitedif the battery temperature
and voltage are outside configured
limits.
Fast chargeis terminatedby anyof
thefollowing: Peak voltage detection (PVD) Negativedelta voltage(-∆V) Maximum voltage Maximum temperature Maximum time
After fast charge, the bq2002/F op-
tionally tops-off and pulse-tricklesthe
battery perthe pre-configured limits.
Fast charge maybe inhibited using
the INH pin. The bq2002/F may also placedin low-standby-power mode
toreduce systempower consumption.
The bq2002F differs from the
bq2002 onlyin thata slightly differ-
ent setof fast-charge and top-off
time limitsis available. All differ-
ences between the two ICs are illus-
trated inTable1.
