General DescriptionThe LM78XX seriesof three terminal regulatorsis available
with several fixed output voltages making them usefulina
wide rangeof applications. Oneof theseis localon card
regulation, eliminating the distribution problems associated
with single point regulation. The voltages available allow
these regulatorstobe usedin logic systems, instrumenta-
tion, HiFi, and other solid state electronic equipment. Al-
though designed primarilyas fixed voltage regulators these
devices canbe used with external componentsto obtain ad-
justable voltages and currents.
The LM78XX seriesis availableinan aluminum TO-3 pack-
age whichwill allow over 1.0A load currentif adequate heat
sinkingis provided. Current limitingis includedto limit the
peak output currenttoa safe value. Safe area protectionfor
the output transistoris providedto limit internal power dissi-
pation.If internal power dissipation becomestoo highforthe
heat sinking provided, the thermal shutdown circuit takes
over preventing theIC from overheating.
Considerable effort was expandedto makethe LM78XXse-
riesof regulators easyto use and minimize the numberof
external components.Itisnot necessaryto bypassthe out-
put, although this does improve transient response. Inputby-
passingis needed onlyifthe regulatoris locatedfar fromthe
filter capacitorof the power supply.
For output voltage other than 5V, 12V and 15V the LM117
series providesan output voltage range from 1.2Vto 57V.
