Description and Introduction

Remote 8-Bit I/O Expander for I2C-Bus # Introduction to the PCF8574AN I/O Expander

The PCF8574AN is a versatile remote 8-bit I/O expander designed for I²C-bus applications. Manufactured by NXP Semiconductors, this integrated circuit (IC) provides a simple solution for expanding the input/output capabilities of microcontrollers with limited GPIO pins.

Operating with a supply voltage range of 2.5V to 6V, the PCF8574AN is compatible with most microcontrollers. It features an open-drain interrupt output, allowing efficient event-driven communication. Each of its eight quasi-bidirectional I/O pins can be independently configured as an input or output, making it suitable for interfacing with sensors, switches, LEDs, and other peripherals.

The device supports standard (100 kHz) and fast (400 kHz) I²C modes, ensuring flexibility in various applications. Its small footprint (DIP-16 or SO-16 package) and low power consumption make it ideal for embedded systems, industrial controls, and consumer electronics.

With built-in latches for stable signal retention and a straightforward I²C interface, the PCF8574AN simplifies circuit design while reducing component count. Its reliability and ease of integration have made it a popular choice among engineers for expanding microcontroller I/O capabilities efficiently.
