DESCRIPTION

Design goals fora Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) converter useda notebook computeror portable application include small size, high effi-
ciency, and low cost. The UCC3972/3 CCFL controllers provide the neces-
sary circuit blocksto implementa highly efficient CCFL backlight power
supplyina small footprint8 pin TSSOP package. The BiCMOS controllers
typically consume less than 1mAof operating current, improving overall
system efficiency when comparedto bipolar controllers requiring 5mAto
10mAof operating current.
External parts countis minimized and system costis reducedby integrating
such featuresasa feedback controlled PWM driver stage, open lamp pro-
tection, startup delay and synchronization circuitry between the buck and
push-pull stages. The UCC3972/3 include an internal shunt regulator, al-
lowing the partto operate with input voltages from 4.5Vupto 25V. The part
supports both analog and externally generated low frequency dimming
modesof operation.
The UCC3973 addsa programmable voltage clampat the BUCK pin. This
feature can be usedto protect the transformer from overvoltage during
startupor when an open lamp occurs. Transformer voltageis controlledby
reducing duty cycle whenan over-voltageis detected.
