The NCP1207A/B combinesa true current mode modulator anda
demagnetization detectorto ensure full borderline/critical Conduction
Modein any load/line conditions and minimum drain voltage switching
(Quasi- -Resonant operation). Duetoits inherent skip cycle capability,
the controller enters burst modeas soonas the power demand falls
belowa predetermined level.As this happensat low peak current,no
audible noise canbe heard. For the NCP1207A,an internal8.0ms timer
preventsthe free--run frequencyto exceed 125 kHz (therefore belowthe
150 kHz CISPR--22 EMI starting limit), while the skip adjustment
capability letsthe user selectthe frequencyat which the burst foldback
takes place. Forthe NCP1207B,the internal timerdurationis reducedto
4.5msto allow operationat higher frequencies (upto 200 kHz).
The Dynamic Self- -Supply (DSS) drastically simplifies the
transformer designin avoiding the useofan auxiliary windingto
supply the NCP1207A/B. This featureis particularly usefulin
applications where the output voltage varies during operation (e.g.
battery chargers). Dueto its high- -voltage technology, the ICis
directly connectedto the high- -voltage DC rail. Asa result, the
short- -circuit trip pointis not dependent upon any VCC auxiliary level.
The transformer core reset detectionis done throughan auxiliary
winding which, brought viaa dedicated pin, also enables fast
Overvoltage Protection (OVP). Oncean OVP has been detected, the permanently latches off.
Finally, the continuous feedback signal monitoring implemented
withan overcurrent fault protection circuitry (OCP) makes the final
design rugged and reliable.
