Precision Fahrenheit Temperature Sensors
General Description
The LM34 seriesare precision integrated-circuit tempera-
ture sensors, whose outputvoltageis linearlyproportionalto
the Fahrenheit temperature.The LM34 thushasan advan-
tage over linear temperature sensors calibratedin degrees
Kelvin,asthe userisnot requiredto subtracta large con-
stant voltage fromits outputto obtain convenient Fahren-
heit scaling. The LM34 doesnot requireany external cali-
brationortrimmingto provide typical accuraciesof g(/2§Fat
room temperature and g1(/2§F overafull b50to a300§F
temperature range. Low costis assuredby trimming and
calibrationatthe wafer level.The LM34’slow output imped-
ance, linear output,and precise inherent calibration make
interfacingto readoutor control circuitry especially easy.It
canbe used with single power suppliesor with plus and
minussupplies.Asit draws only75 mAfromits supply,ithas
verylow self-heating,less than 0.2§Finstillair.The LM34is
ratedto operate overa b50§to a300§F temperature
range, whilethe LM34Cis ratedfora b40§to a230§F
range (0§F with improved accuracy). The LM34 seriesis
available packagedin hermetic TO-46 transistor packages,
whilethe LM34C, LM34CAand LM34Dare also availablein
the plastic TO-92 transistor package. The LM34Dis also
availableinan 8-lead surface mount small outline package.
The LM34isa complementtothe LM35 (Centigrade) tem-
perature sensor.
