General DescriptionThe LM2707isa magnetic boost regulator specifically de-
signedfor white LED drive applications. Tightly regulated
LED currents, exceptional LED brightness uniformity, and
very high LED-drive power efficiency (>80%) canallbe
achieved by stacking the LEDsin series between the
LM2707 output andthe low-voltage feedbackpin (0.515V).
The LM2707 requires onlya few small external components. small inductor witha low saturation current rating can
safelybe used because the tightly controlled current limit
circuit prevents large inductor current spikes, evenat start-
up. The output capacitor can alsobe small duetothe tightly
controlled output over-voltage protection circuit.
The LM2707isan excellent choicefor display backlighting
and other general-purpose lighting functionsin battery pow-
ered applications. The 2.3V-to-7V input voltage rangeofthe
device easily accommodates single-cell Lithium-Ion batter-
ies and battery chargers.
The LM2707 features 18V output capability, PFM regulation,
anda high-current switching transistor (400mA peak). These
characteristics allowthe partto drivea series stringof 2-to-4
LEDs with forward currents between0 and 40mA. LED
brightness canbe adjusted dynamically simplyby applyinga
PWM signaltothe enable (EN) pin. The PWM signal canbe fastas 50kHz because the LM2707 hasa fast turn-on
time. additionto LED-drive applications, the LM2707 can also usedasa general purpose DC-DC voltage regulatorin
boost converter applications.
The LM2707is availableina SOT23-8 surface mount pack-
age.
