General Description
The LM117 seriesof adjustable 3-terminal positive voltage
regulatorsis capableof supplyingin excessof 1.5A overa
1.2Vto 37V output range. Theyare exceptionally easyto
useand requireonlytwo external resistorstosetthe output
voltage. Further, bothline and load regulationare better
than standard fixed regulators. Also,the LM117is packaged standard transistor packages whichare easily mounted
and handled. additionto higher performance than fixed regulators,the
LM117series offersfull overload protection availableonlyin
IC’s. Includedonthe chipare current limit, thermal overload
protectionand safe area protection.All overload protection
circuitry remains fully functional evenifthe adjustmentter-
minalis disconnected.
Normally,no capacitorsare needed unlessthe deviceis
situated more than6 inches fromthe input filter capacitors
inwhich casean input bypass isneeded.An optional output
capacitorcanbe addedto improve transient response.The
adjustment terminalcanbe bypassedto achieve very high
ripple rejectionratioswhichare difficultto achievewith stan-
dard 3-terminal regulators.
Besides replacing fixed regulators,the LM117is usefulina
wide varietyof other applications. Sincethe regulatoris
‘‘floating’’and sees onlythe input-to-output differential volt-
age, suppliesof several hundred voltscanbe regulatedas
longasthe maximum inputto output differentialisnotex-
ceeded,i.e., avoid short-circuitingthe output.
Also,it makesan especially simple adjustable switchingreg-
ulator,a programmable output regulator,orby connectinga
fixed resistor betweenthe adjustmentpin and output,the
LM117canbe usedasa precision current regulator. Sup-
plieswith electronic shutdown canbe achievedby clamping
the adjustment terminalto ground which programsthe out-
putto 1.2V where most loads draw little current.
