PROTECTION IC FOR RINGING SLICS
A.S.D.™
LCP02-150B1
ProtectionIC recommendedfor ringing SLICs. Wide firing voltage range: from -110Vto +95V. Low gate triggering current:IG= 5mA max. Peak pulse current: IPP= 30A (10/1000μs). Holding current:IH= 150mA min. UL497B approved (file E136224)
FEATURES

The LCP02-150B1 has been developedto protect
SLICs operatingon both negative and positive bat-
tery supplies,as wellason high voltage SLICs.It
providescrowbar mode protectionfor both TIP and
RING lines. The surge suppressionis assumedfor
each wire by two thyristor structures, one dedi-
catedto positive surges the second one for nega-
tive surges. Both positive and negative threshold
levels are programmable by two gates (Gn and
Gp). The useof transistors decreases the battery
currents during surge suppression.
The LCP02-150B1 has high Bellcore Core, ITU-T
and FCC Part68 lightning surge ratings, ensuring
rugged performancein the field.In addition,itis
also specifiedto assista designerto comply with
UL1950, IEC950 and CSA C22.2.Itis UL 497B
approved (file E136224), and has UL94-V0 resin
approved

LCP02-150B1
Figure5 shows the classical protection circuit using the LCP02 crowbar concept. This topology has been
developpedto protect the new two-battery voltage SLICs.It allows both positive and negative firing thresholdsbe programmed. The LCP02-150B1 has two gates (Gn and Gp). Gnis biasedto negative battery voltage
-Vbat, while Gpis biasedto the positive battery voltage +Vb.
Whena negative surge occurson one wire (L1 for example),a current Ign flows through the baseof the
transistor T1 and then injectsa currentin the gateof the thyristor Th1 which fires. All the surge current
flows through the ground. After the surge, when the current flowing through Th1 becomes less negative
than the negative holding current Ih-, Th1 switches off. This holding currentIH-is temperature dependant per figure2.
Whena positive surge occurson one wire (L1 for example),a current Igp flows through the baseof the
transistor T2 and then injectsa currentin the gateof the thyristor Th2 which fires. All the surge current
flows through the ground. After the surge, when the current flowing through Th2 becomes less positive
than the positive holding current Ih+, Th2 switches off. This holding current IH+, typically 20mAat 25°C,is
temperature dependant and the same figure2 also applies.
The capacitors Cn and Cp are usedto speed up the crowbar structure firing during the fast riseor fall
edges. This allowsto minimize the dynamical breakover voltageat the SLIC Tip and Ring inputsduring fast
surges. Please note that these capacitors are generally available around the SLIC. Tobe efficient they
havetobeas closeas possibleto the LCP02-150B1 gate pins (Gn and Gp) andto the reference ground
track(or plan). The optimized valuefor Cn and Cpis 220nF.
The series resistors Rs1 and Rs2 designedin figure5 represent the fuse resistorsor the PTCs which are
neededto withstand the power contactor the power induction tests imposedby the country standards.
Taking this factor into account, the actual lightning surge current flowing through the LCP02-150B1is
equalto: surge= Vsurge/ (Rg+ Rs)
With V surge= peak surge voltage imposedby the standard.= series resistorof the surge generator= series resistorof the line card (e.g. PTC)
e.g.: Fora line card with 50Ωof series resistors whichhastobe qualified under Bellcore 1000V 10/1000μs
surge, the present current through the LCP02-150B1is equalto: surge= 1000/ (10+ 50)=
