General Description

The DS96176 DifferentialBus Transceiverisa monolithicin-
tegrated circuit designedfor bidirectional data communica-
tionon balanced multipoint bus transmission lines. The
transceiver meets EIA Standard RS-485as wellas
RS-422A.
The DS96176 combinesa TRI-STATE® differentialline driver
anda differential inputline receiver, bothof which operate
froma single 5.0V power supply. The driver and receiver
havean active Enable thatcanbe externally connectedto
functionasa direction control.The driver differential outputs
andthe receiver differential inputsare internally connected form differential input/output (I/O)bus portsthatarede-
signedto offer minimum loadingtothebus wheneverthe
driveris disabledor when VCC=0V. These ports feature
wide positive and negative common mode voltage ranges,
makingthe device suitablefor multipoint applicationsin
noisy environments.
The driverisdesignedto handle loadsupto60 mAofsinkor
source current. The driver features positive and negative
current-limitingand thermal shutdown forprotection fromline
fault conditions. Thermal shutdownis designedto occurat
junction temperatureof approximately 160˚C.The receiver
featuresa typical input impedanceof15kΩ,an input sensi-
tivityof ±200mV,anda typical input hysteresisof50mV.
The DS96176canbe usedin transmissionline applications
employingthe DS96172 andthe DS96174 quad differential
line driversandthe DS96173and DS96175 quad differential
line receivers.
